This is a full-time, overtime-exempt position on the Tacoma site of The Evergreen State College. This is an “at-will” appointment, exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements.

Position Purpose

The Managing Director is responsible for direction and oversight of The Evergreen State College Tacoma site administrative operations, facilities, technology, and staff in support of the academic programs scheduled in Tacoma.

The position’s primary responsibility is support and promotion of the undergraduate, upper-division program and to work closely with the program faculty and particularly with the lead faculty program coordinator. The position also coordinates with the Directors of the Master in Public Administration, Master in Teaching, Native Pathways, and bridge programs to provide support for their programs at the Tacoma site. Promoting and supporting community outreach and inclusion is an important element of the position.

Nature and Scope

The Managing Director reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost (Provost) and is a member of the Provost’s management team. Other positions reporting to the Provost include the Directors of the Washington Center, the Longhouse Education and Cultural Center, the Center for Community Based Learning and Action, the Center for Sustainable Infrastructure, the Sustainability in Prisons Project, the Native Pathways Program, the Master in Environmental Studies program, the Master in Public Administration, the Master in Teaching program; the Associate Vice President for Academic Budget and Financial Planning; the Director of Institutional Research and Assessment; and the Executive Assistant to the Provost..

Tacoma Undergraduate Upper-Division Program Description
Evergreen’s Tacoma program is committed to providing up to 200 junior- and senior-level students with a community responsive, interdisciplinary liberal arts education. The value “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve” and the broader institutional educational outcomes that emphasize collaborative learning across differences, thinking critically, commitment to social justice, diversity, environmental stewardship and service in the public interest are core principles of the program. Students are offered the ability to customize their program to meet specific academic and career goals, in a unique interdisciplinary liberal arts program culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree. Essential Functions

Administrative Leadership
• Facilitate inclusive decision-making based on exploring, understanding, and addressing stakeholder (students, staff, faculty, and community) needs and concerns.
• Provide periodic administrative program reviews that address: long and short-term goals, staffing and budget needs, and policy changes.
• Develop the Tacoma site’s operating budget and ensure all expenditures and allocations are made within state and college fiscal guidelines; prepare and submit new budget requests (operating and capital) to the Provost.
• Maintain appropriate and effective administration of all operational matters including human resource management, student services support, technology, facilities and security.
• Complete an annual statement of accomplishments which contains a self-evaluation.
• Plan, organize, and conduct program self-studies as required.
• Provide direct supervision to the Coordinator of Tacoma Student Services, Secretary, Office Assistant 2, and Media Laboratory Coordinator positions, including interview, hire, train, coach, evaluate performance, and address job performance issues.
• Monitor and troubleshoots problems.
• Manage resources shared between programs utilizing the Tacoma site.
• Collaborate with other units of the college, such as Business Services, Human Resource Services, Registration and Records, etc.

Institutional Relations
• Establish and maintain clear lines of communication between the Academic Vice President and Provost and between relevant offices in Academics, Student Affairs, Advancement, and Finance and Administration.
• Oversee the development of all promotion materials in collaboration with – Marketing and Communications.
• Serve on committees and disappearing task forces as required.

External Outreach
• Manage program recruitment and retention to ensure that target enrollment numbers are met.
• Promote the Tacoma undergraduate program through outreach to the community, particularly in Pierce County.
• Develop and foster alumni relations in collaboration with Advancement Services and Alumni Programs office.
• In collaboration with Advancement, provide leadership in fundraising initiatives for the Tacoma site.

Other Duties
• Coordinate and manage resources shared between the undergraduate, graduate, and bridge programs utilizing the Tacoma site.
• Serve on program and college governance committees as required.

• Knowledge of management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership, and the coordination of people and resources.

• Excellent supervisory skills and abilities, including the ability to interview, hire, and coach a diverse staff, successfully train and supervise the work of others, evaluate performance, and address job performance issues.
• Ability to understand and comply with the Classified Collective Bargaining Agreement provisions and institutional, state, and federal policies, laws, and personnel guidelines.
• Ability to develop and oversee a budget; knowledge of the state budget process to manage program budget.
• Ability to establish strong community partnerships and provide leadership in fundraising and acquisition of resources to support teaching and learning.
• Attention to detail and good organizational skills to manage responsibilities effectively and efficiently; ability to meet deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree, or equivalent.
• Five years of applicable higher education work experience.
• Two years of experience in staff supervision and budget management.
